What is trauma?
Trauma is anything you have experienced, witnessed, or learned about that was debilitating. Trauma can leave a scar.
What are some cognitive-behavioral symptoms of trauma?
Cognitive symptoms can appear as:
– irrational beliefs (believing the trauma was your fault or that you deserved it)
– distrust (beginning with yourself, then others)
– distorted self-image
– loss/betrayal of social contracts
Behavior symptoms can appear as:
– avoidance (not wanting to talk about the trauma, or topics related to the trauma)
– modeling maladaptive behaviors (enacting behaviors that are inappropriate such as violent or sexualized behaviors)
– trauma bonding (when victims are close to their perpetrators and depend on them)
– anger
– substance abuse
– self-injurious behaviors
If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms or find that you have a trauma that needs to be reconciled, all our clinicians are trauma-informed, and highly trained in providing TF-CBT.
