La Concordia's Clinical
Training Program

Our Mission: To train future clinicians in providing culturally competent care and overall wellness to those in need of mental health services.

Our Vision: Our clinicians will be equipped to understand and respect diverse cultural backgrounds, fostering healing and well-being for every individual in need of support.

About Our Program

At La Concordia, we value education as a resource for wellness in our community, for this reason we have structured our training program with several activities designed to build well-rounded, trauma informed, culturally affirming clinicians. La Concordia Psychotherapy and Wellness Clinic offers practicum opportunities for postdoctoral psychological associates advanced training to ensure higher level competency of clinical assessment, psychological diagnosis, intervention treatment and planning, and consultation. Additionally, we offer ongoing training in: organization management and administration; professional conduct, ethics, law and standards of practice; and an understanding of issues relevant to all of the above. Training will be accomplished through professional socialization, mentoring, as well as adequate supervision and group consultation. Training may also include attending additional didactics available in the community, as well as implementing didactics for other trainees and/or providers. Our practice ensures that trainees achieve advanced clinical competency via individualized goals, professional objectives, and core competencies that will be assessed on a quarterly basis, or as needed.

Didactic and experiential training will occur at La Concordia Psychotherapy and Wellness Clinic via active participation in weekly individual supervision with the primary and delegated supervisors, weekly group supervision, Seminar Lectures, and group didactics. The primary supervisor will be available for consultation as clinical issues or concerns arise. In the event the primary supervisor is not available, trainees are required to communicate with their delegated supervisor or licensed staff. The trainee will build upon their existing clinical skills and knowledge via ongoing scholarly research of professional articles to better inform treatment interventions that best suit individual client needs. The trainee may attend specific clinical treatment didactics and/or professional conferences as they relate to specific cases and/or areas of clinical interest. Training regarding the organization, maintenance, and administration of clinical services in a private practice setting.

Profession-Wide Competencies

To ensure the quality of the personal and professional development of La Concordia’s interns, each intern will have an individual learning plan that is developed by the intern and their individual supervisor at the beginning of the training year. Program Curriculum

  • • What is Trauma?
Trauma is anything you have experienced, witnessed, or learned about that was debilitating. It can stem from a wide range of events, from personal loss to violence, abuse, or even natural disasters. Trauma has the power to disrupt your sense of safety, alter your worldview, and leave lasting emotional or psychological effects. These effects may not always be immediately visible, but they can manifest in ways that impact your relationships, mental health, and daily functioning. Over time, trauma can leave a scar that shapes how you perceive and interact with the world around you. Healing is a process, and while scars may fade, their impact can remain, influencing your journey toward recovery.
  • • What is TF-CBT?
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an integrative treatment model designed to help individuals heal from trauma. It combines trauma-sensitive interventions, cognitive behavioral techniques, and attachment theory to address how trauma affects relationships. TF-CBT also incorporates developmental neurobiology to explain the brain's response to trauma, family therapy to improve support systems, and empowerment therapy to restore a sense of control. Additionally, humanistic therapy encourages self-compassion and gentleness in the healing process. Together, these approaches provide a holistic framework for recovery and emotional well-being.
  • • What are some cognitive-behavioral symptoms of trauma?
Cognitive symptoms of trauma can include irrational beliefs, such as thinking the trauma was your fault or that you deserved it, as well as distrust, initially toward yourself and later toward others. These symptoms may also involve a distorted self-image and a sense of loss or betrayal in social relationships, disrupting the trust and connections that typically support emotional well-being. Behavioral symptoms of trauma can include avoidance, such as reluctance to talk about the trauma or related topics, and modeling maladaptive behaviors, like acting out inappropriately through violence or sexualized actions. Other symptoms may include trauma bonding, where victims become emotionally dependent on their perpetrators, as well as anger, substance abuse, and self-injurious behaviors as coping mechanisms for emotional pain.

Behind any condition lies an important person.
